Biting insects do so to have a blood meal, once they have bitten they inject saliva which contains an anticoagulant and an anesthetic. The result is irritation to the bite area and possible infection.
The most common biting insects are fleas and bed bugs.
Fleas usually find their way into your home via cats and dogs. The female flea will feed on the blood of your pet and then lay hundreds of eggs in the animals fur, bedding, and areas in your house where the animal is allowed to roam. Common places are under the skirting boards, on the edges of carpets, soft furnishings, and under laminate flooring.
The eggs are held in place by a glue like substance excreted by the female flea until the larva emerges which then feeds on organic matter and flea faeces until it pupates. The pupa will lay dormant until an adult flea emerges triggered by vibrations, changes in temperature, or carbon dioxide. The flea will then feed on cats, dogs and humans.
