About Rats
If conditions are ideal, the female brown rat can breed all year. They can reproduce every three weeks and can have up to fourteen pups per litter, but seven is more typical. The rat becomes sexually mature in only five weeks. A female rat can nurse a litter while being pregnant with another. So, if not dealt with a rat population can swiftly grow.
Rats tend to cause damage to wiring and wood work because they need to gnaw in order to keep their incisor teeth at the right length, as otherwise they do not stop growing. This, coupled with the fact they spread disease via their urine and droppings, makes it important to get on top of the situation quickly. The pest control products that are widely available to buy, are half the strength of the products that I will use.
The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), also known as sewer rat or Norwegian rat, is the UK’s most common rat. The black rat (Rattus rattus), first introduced to the UK in Roman times, are now scarce in the UK, confined to ports and coastal towns. The brown rat can swim and it is no myth that can enter a house via a toilet. They are accomplished climbers as well as good diggers, creating extensive burrows. Older rats tend not to burrow. Rats control their temperature by expanding and contracting blood vessels in their tails. They do not sweat or pant to keep cool. Rats are neophobic, meaning they mistrust anything new placed in their environment. Rats use muscle memory (kinesthesis) feeling their way quickly along the sides of structures.
